Whats what with the "You want what?

As I said in an earlier post, the insurance company wants the kitchen floor repaired due to a trip hazard. They also want the cinder block and concrete steps under the handicapped ramp structurally sound.

So I called in the local carpet and Tile company for an inspection and estimate.

Foto is stock foto not actual subject.

The linoleum under the table is worn through, the problem is that when it was installed the "jewel" of the industry was paper backed rolls. During removal the flooring de-laminates leaving a think paper layer that tears irregular. The way to remove it is scraping and pealing. Professionals use machines,

Unfortunately, reality reared it's ugly head...You see my parents built the house and moved in, in 1959. the floor of choice at the time was a resilient hard tile, and THAT tile is under my linoleum.

That nice hard tile cannot be removed by a flooring company, that tile has to be removed by a hazardous material removal service, because it is asbestos. And that...costs money, lots and lots of money.

Luckily for me there is an alternative, they come in, trim the lifts and peels, fill the gaps and lay down a new plywood floor base over the top of the old tile. Asbestos can't be removed but it can be buried. After the new floor base is down they place the new surface down, seal and caulk all edges, put in transition reducers (new floor higher than existing adjoining floors), trim all doors (or replace if need be) to clear the increased floor height.

So after sweating the estimate for the day, it came back a 10th of what I was fearing, so, it is a go and on Friday the thirteenth the crew arrives to start work.

The Foreman seems like a cool guy
