Don't want to hear it? Don't read it.
I believe it is a crock, a pack of lies, and a potential end to society as we know it. Not even talking about social media with it's effect of turning humans into non socially capable people (if we don't interact in person, we don't interact), nor it's impact on crime,(Police departments now believe the rate of violence is increasing because of the ability to become somewhat famous or getting a point across, staged events for world viewing).
In business related use only: We were told at the dawn of the computer age that the computer would make the world paperless, well it may at that, there are more reports and other items printed than ever before. Studies show that computers actually generate roughly 150 times more paper use than before they were around. If the world will become paperless it will be because of de-foliage.
In my business field (automotive repairs and sales) the computer has replaced 99% of the hand written forms. On the automotive repair side the work mainly changed from a person looking for the problem and either correcting the issue mechanically or having to replace a part, to a computer reading a computer and telling the tech to replace a part. And it's not much better than the backyarder when it comes to some repairs, it tells a tech to replace a part, then does another check ad tells them to replace something else.
As for parts sales, the parts man used to look up a requested part number in a book or using a microfische, write the part number on an RO and hand it out. Now he punches a vin into a computer, it gets the part number and enters it electronically on a Repair Order.
This is all well and good, but there are no back up systems. how many other fields are like this, most I'll bet. Now if one system is down, one program, like the one that reads a vin and picks out the part. The employee has to enter the vehicle information in the computer, and as he enters or makes each choice he gets another question. So he and the technician spend 10 to 15 minutes just asking and getting questions, before he gets close to a part number.
The microfische system and the books had all the questions in one location so you could see all the things you needed to know right away, ask the tech, he would make one trip and have all the info. heaven forbid the power goes out now, there is no diagnosis, no parts look up, no way to bill anything out, no way to invoice a customer. Everything stops. With books and hand written repair orders work went on.
So much today, everything today is electronically linked. If any country like this one were to get hit with a major power outage, everything, everything would end.
Do you know who technology really helps?
The business owner and the accountants, they no longer have to look through hand written reports and ledgers. They no longer have to add up figures, they just push a button, get the answer and walk away, meanwhile the employee is still expected to produce even though he is physically restrained by failed programs or power from doing so.
