I have long been pissed about the movie, in the Book Faramir was cool, never dragged their asses down or tried to take the ring home. King Theoden never said Why should we help Gondor. The Ghost from the paths of the dead never went to Gondor to fight, they just helped secure the ships, Aragorn picked up troops along the way and freed the slaves on board the ships who went onto Gondor with him to fight. Frodo never sided with Smeagle, frodo and Sam just got separated in the Spider tunnels.
The Hobbit was a lot closer, until the battles started, in the book, Bilbo pretty much was just fed up with all the foolishness and walked away, I believe it was Tolkien's way of not having to write out a whole entire new battle scene.
In the lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring, Tom Bombadil was left out of the movie,(he was the one who saved the hobbits from the wraith and gave them their weapons before they arrived at Bree) A male elf showed up to help the group, not Aragorns babe. As a matter of fact she didn't show up in the book until after the final battle. The Elves never went to Helms Deep, the Dunedain (Aragorns men, more of the men of the west) did
Don't get me wrong, the movies were entertaining, but not quite to the mark.
This really used to bother me that they changed characters personalities.(By the way Faramir hooks up with Theoden's daughter). I mean change the story for time and ease, but don't turn good characters into assholes.
Then, one day I came upon this...
I feel much better now.
