Top photo:  (LST-510) was an LST-491-class tank landing ship built for the United States Navy during World War II. Named for Buncombe County, North Carolina, she was the only U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name LST-510 was laid down on 27 September 1943 at Jeffersonville, Indiana by the Jeffersonville Boat and Machine Company; launched on 30 November 1943...
During World War II LST-510 was assigned to the Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater and participated in the following campaign:

Invasion of Normandy, 6 to 25 June 1944
  • Decommissioned, 1 July 1946, at Green Cove Springs, FL.
  • Laid up in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Green Cove Springs
  • Named USS Buncombe County (LST-510), 1 July 1955
  • Struck from the Naval Register, 1 November 1958
  • Sold in 1960 or 1961 to the Chesapeake Bay Ferry District, Norfolk, VA., renamed MV Virginia Beach
  • Resold in 1964 or 1965 to Delaware River and Bay Authority, renamed MV Cape Henlopen and converted to a passenger and auto ferry in 1966, operated between Lewes, DL - Cape May, N.J.
  • Purchased in 1983 by Cross Sound Ferry Services Inc., New London, CT. and name retained
  • Current Disposition, operational as ferry between New London, CT. and Orient Point on Long Island, N.Y.

  • USS LST-510 received one battle star for World War II service
