Aero vs Aero

I learned something rather interesting today, the aerodynamics between a bike with a full fairing and windshield are entirely different from that without any. Sure I know, you already knew that, but do you have scientific proof? I do. Without planning it.

I have smoked many times while riding Charlene,

As the air rushes under the fairing it is forced upwards, the air above the fairing is also forced upwards, But a small amount of the flow gets caught between the rider and the fairing causing a circulation of air.

When an ash falls from the cigarette it actually hovers for a second then fly's up and forward out over the windshield then once in the air flow fly's back over the riders head.

Now a Dyna, or any bike without a windshield has an entirely different flow pattern..

The wind comes straight at you, the only area of lift is created by the riders body.

This means the ash doesn't so much drop off the cigarette as gets blows back at the rider.

If the rider is inhaling through his mouth at the time he inhales the ash, which hits the back of his throat. At this point the ash speads on impact coating the entire throat, causing what is commonly referred to as the gag reflex to take over. The rider then maneuvers the bike to the side of the road and stops...

At this point the other people with him should be pulled over up the road waiting and wondering what the hell the problem is.
