They didn't build an item to last a "certain" amount of time, they didn't build things to be replaced later. They built things to last...forever, built them to handle what ever came down the line, built things so well that they outlasted the job.
Nowadays you want an industrial crane, or lift and you have to look through a multitude of items with weight restrictions, size limits, back in the day, they built things so that what ever showed up could be handled and the job would not get held up.
This morning I started building a television stand, the thing is made of tin, with bolts that screw into it and pull out of it. Parts don't fit together well, and I'm sure that, once built, if this thing ever needs to be moved it will halve the stands life.
There was a time where a simple thing called pride of workmanship filled the work place. Nowadays, this country has become pride of cash made fast. It doesn't matter how long something lasts or how crappy you made something, (or had another country make for you) as long as you don't spend much and crank out your product to make big cash NOW.
