October 7th..today, but then, not now
1780 Patriot militia under Colonel William Campbell defeats Loyalist militia under Major Patrick Ferguson at the Battle of Kings Mountain, North Carolina.
1816 the first double deck Steamboat arrives in New Orleans, the Washington. The ship was launched earlier in the year on the Monongahela River above Pittsburgh. The design would go on to dominate river boats.
1864 Civil War Battle of Darbytown Road, after Richmond, Confederates attempt to re capture ground lost but Union troops prevail.
1871 A fire erupts in Wisconsin which is destined to be the worst fire in American history, 2 billion trees were consumed and 1,200 people lost their lives. It would be little known though because the next day, 250 miles away, the Great Chicago fire was about to start.
1913 Henry Ford activates first moving assembly line, entire car built in three minutes

1943 Under the command of Rear Admiral Shigematsu Sakaibara, Commander of the Japanese Garrison on Wake Island, orders the execution of 96 P.O.W.s, claiming they were trying to communicate with U.S. Forces with a Radio. The prisoners were blindfolded and shot.
1949 East Germany was created with Wilhelm Pieck as East Germany's first President.
