Pizza and emergency calls

There were a couple of times where I can remember Pizza being involved with an Emergency response. One instance was that we had just made a call for pizza from that now famous movie Pizza place and were just about getting in a car to retrieve the order when we were called in as the 4th engine to a brush fire.

The Chauffeur at the time was an older gentleman named Tex. We got on our gear, jumped on the rig and headed out the door. Where we were suppose to turn right and head straight for the scene, Tex went straight. he pulled up outside the pizza house with lights flashing, sent me in to grab and pay form the pizza, and bring them back to the rig. Tex hit the siren turned right and headed off to the other towns grass fire. Tex's excuse, We are fourth due to a brush fire on a small island that we can't get to. All the fire can do is burn marsh grass and no matter which way it goes it ends up at the river. Sure enough, we pulled up, sat back, ate our pizza waiting for orders. When the orders came it was to head back to the station, not needed.

The second time was less pleasant, it was hot, it was on a highway and we didn't get any pizza.

We had responded to a multiple car accident on the interstate, This was a different Fire Department I was with by this time. We had just driven to the pizza house in the next town, (back then there wasn't one in our town), and were on our way back when we took the call.
With ten assorted large pizzas on board we arrived on the highway and began to extricate people, and move them to ambulances. Our engine was parked diagonally across the three lanes stopping all traffic. We were on the scene for roughly four hours as it was a multi fatality and there were a number of vehicles that had to be removed before we were released. Arriving back at the engine and feeling rather peckish we found that there was no pizza. The driver who had to stay with the rig had gotten hungry, and since the pizza was getting cold he had carried back to the first line of cars, set them on the hood and him and about twenty or so people had a small picnic on the highway as we handled injured people.

It wasn't a total loss though, the lieutenant talked to the Chief and they arranged to have ten pizzas brought to the firehouse for us afterwards. Excellent Officers can make your day a lot better. Rotten ones, and there were a few, made the days miserable, but we won't go there today.
