How things have changed over the years

The Colman Street area of New London has changed over the years,

Many area people don't know that 50 years ago the area between Broad Street and Jefferson avenue often changed its name. None of those businesses existed along the left side of Colman street back then and the reason was simple, Colman street regularly became Lake Colman. The area between Colman street and the ridge of the hill was a swamp, and in the rainy season or during Spring thaw the area filled up covering the woods and Colman street. At those times barriers would be placed at Broad street and at Jefferson Avenue since you could not drive through Lake Colman. The area was later filled and built up which stopped the flooding problem so today businesses line the right of way.

Here's another little tidbit of history, further back in time, the area between Learned street Morgan and Bishop was the City Dump. When this area grew up the dump was filled in. To build the buildings I walk in all day long hundreds of pilings were pounded into the ground so the buildings wouldn't sink into the former dump.

Yes, a long time ago, where I am sitting in a building, in an office at my desk was a dump.

Some things you see, really don't change.
