Grimpoteuthis - Dumbo Octopus
This is not just one species but an entire genus of deep sea octopuses.
The Umbrella Octopus.
Some species are short, squat and yellow, others resmble jellyfish with one walking foot.
some have spines, others suckers on their webbed arms. Some look like a normal octopus but have colored ears. There are 13 different species covered by this one genus.
They live on teh ocean floor with a diet consisting of crustaceans, worms, and bivalves (hinged shell mollusks).
these little guys live on the ocean floor at depths of 9800 to 13,000 feet, while a couple of the species live at 23,000 feet
they live between 3 to 5 years and are usually 7.9 to 12" in size although the largest recorded was 5.9 feet.
