A little local History

The AS-11, U.S.S. Fulton submarine tender was stationed i New London for years. her keel was laid in 1939 and worked through WWII, she was decommissioned in 1946 and put in reserve. She was recommissioned in 1951 From my earliest days until September 1991 she was stationed in New London and was a regular sight as you crossed over the Thames River. She was decommissioned a second time in 1991 and in 1995 sold for scrap.

Do you remember seeing her?

Did you know she took the place of another Submarine Tender?

She replaced the U.S.S. Fulton AS-1.

The AS-1 Fulton's keel was laid in 1913 although she was to be named the Niagara. She was renamed Fulton and launched June 1914. She was commissioned in December of that year as Submarine Tender #1 ,U.S.S. Fulton.  She was designated AS-1 in 1920.
She was decommissioned in 1934 and went to scrap in June of 1935.

You can see the AS-1 was smaller than the AS-11...

But then...
The WWII Balao class submarine, at 312 feet and 6+60 men..

Was a little larger Submarine than the A-7 and A-8 class, 64 foot seven man subs the AS-1 handled at the beginning.
