I woke up this morning to a world bathed in white, sure it's pretty, pretty depressing. I threw salt down, warmed up the car, made a coffee an headed to work. The entire area looked like a northern New England post card, all the trees decked out in their whites. (Navy Trees?)
I noticed when I got in the car that the outside temperature was 21. (-6.1111111111 for you Celsius types). The sun was not fully awake yet and just beginning to greet the day, so from my house, down a couple back roads, out onto 184 and west to the hill below Flanders road the temperature remained at 21. The trees on the top of the hill leading up to Flanders rd were bathed in golden sunlight along with the very top of the hill. I wondered if the temperature would rise when I cruised into the sun lit area and how much. As I entered into the golden light the temperature dropped, by two degrees, to 19F (-7.2222222222°C).
So, the winter sun makes it colder it would appear. The temperature stayed at 19F until climbing the hill up to the Thames River Valley, where it returned to 21F.
I have noticed this before on a motorcycle but never with a thermometer available. When you are heading east out of New London, cross the river and drop down the hill at Wall-Mart the there is always a noticeable drop in temperature. I guess what it means is Groton is a miserable cold place. Perhaps though the temperature difference is one of the reasons for the bubble.
The Bubble: Most storms coming north and east are worse on the New London side of the Thames River than on the Groton/Mystic side. As a matter of fact, storms (snow and thunder) usually come up to the river heading east, then follow the river north to Norwich and then east again. Sitting in Mystic in the summer you can watch thunderstorms coming from the west and then run north or south then east again after passing you by. They sort of surround you but the violent parts seems to pass us by.
The temperature at the top of the hill and across the river was 21F again, and as I dropped off the bridge into New London it was 24F.
Do you know how to convert Fahrvergnugen to Celsius?
It's actually rather easy.
(F - 32) x 5/9 =C so (19F-32) x 5/9 = -7.2222222222C
Or you can just face reality, it's cold and miserable who cares what the number is.
