But according to Janes All the World Aircraft, the foremost authority on flight, enough evidence has come to light to show that the first flight was in Fairfield Ct. in 1901 by Gustave Whitehead. He performed two demonstration runs and the 2nd of which covered 1 1/2 miles at a height of 50 feet.
