The BAR was essentially the Squad machine Gun in WW2.
What we found out with this sort of weapon was, having the biggest gun doesn't mean your safer.
As a matter of fact, it often meant you were a primary target.
The BAR had a slow rate of fire, (which is one of the reasons I like it so much). the Germans had the MG34 and MG42 (1934, 1942 respectively). The 34 had a faster rate of fire and was very accurate, the 42 had an impressive rate of fire, often compared to the sound of tearing sheets. But the 42 was not as accurate.
The German weapons also had a quick release to change barrels, something we did not have. The U.S. military was very impressed with this weapons design and later had the M60 built based on the MG42 features.
Once again though, a weapon that can lay down suppressive fire is often the first target of an enemy. U.S. Troops were trained to fire in bursts and to stay mobile when possible so the enemy couldn't determine were to lay down heavy fire.
