I guess Cats do need us.

My cat has been a loner forever, she is an indoor/outdoor kind of girl. Our job as humans was a combination of doorman, chef, and first aid administer. That cat, being female, was never overly friendly. Male cats have a tendency to be overtly affectionate.  They like to be picked up, held, and kept around close at hand. Female cats, for the most part aren't. They take the attention while it suits them, pet them too much and they purr and curl up with you, then when they have had enough they claw and bite.

My current cat has always been like that, open the door let her out, open the door let her in. Feed her when she wants food, then she disappears into some part of the house until she needs you again.

My father passed away almost two years ago now, and that time the cat has been being left alone in the house when I go to work during the day or go out for an evening. Starting about eight months ago or so she has been following me around the house. If I am in the living room watching television she curls up next to me, if I change rooms so does she.

I guess she misses my fathers company.
