gee wilikers, I saw a bike at the show that had a cam replacement...

and I wanna do that to mine....

Well, it's a good thought, but there is more to consider than just throwing in cams. Cams have to be matched to other components. Everything from Carburetor to intake, from valve size to bore and stroke, from EFI to flow have to be considered. And let us not forget compression rations, exhaust systems and what firing system (ignition) you have. It all has to work together to receive the desired performance you are looking for. This is one of the first things you have to know...what it is that you want from the bike. Are you looking for low end torque? Are you looking for speed? is your bike usually freighted? (lot's of junk carried around with you) Do you normally ride with a passenger or by yourself?

Everything should be considered before starting out. there is also the choice of head and cylinder work or bolt in cams. Even something like bolt in cams will require re-jetting or reprogramming, perhaps an air cleaner upgrade and an exhaust modification. The best favor you can do for yourself is find someone who does that type of performance work and talk to them, find out what they suggest and be prepared to answer the questions they ask. Before all of this though, it comes back to "Knowing" what you want from the bike. If you are looking for top end speed so you can try and occasionally keep up with that "other" bike, remember what you do to get that speed, will cost you somewhere else.
