Saturday was pretty much a blur, Since I had taken the bike to the 911 run in 2010 or was it 2009 I can't remember. I do remember it was a great night. It was a ride from New London to WestBrook Ct. to meet up with the Club, then a ride down 95 to the Merritt to the Hutch, across the TriBoro into Queens for the meet up for the run to the World Trade center, Ground Zero. We arrived rather late, and with the amount of bikes on hand I couldn't get to the dealership. I don't like to wear clothes from places I haven't ridden to, but seeing as I had gone there on the bike "Felicity" I decided I still wanted a shirt.
So Saturday was a cage ride to Queens, with a stop in New Roc City. So we headed down I95, Gerald and myself to acquire some shirts. We programmed the GPS to take us to the dealerships. Did you know that the new rest areas have more selections then they used to, they still have McDonald's, but now there is Cine Bon, Some Organic store, Sbarros, Dunkin and something I had never heard of before...Cheese Boy, Cheese boy makes grilled Cheese sandwiches, I love Grilled Cheese sandwiches, I ordered a basil and tomato, Gerry ordered bacon Tomato and cheese. We got our food and sat down at the table to eat, both basil, tomato and cheese sandwiches were pretty damned good. but I believe Gerry would have liked his better if he had received the bacon he ordered instead of basil.
Back in the car we continued towards New Roc City. getting to the City is easy, finding a dealership when you have never been there isn't, but we had the trusty GPS plugged in and the Fire scanner plugged in to hear FDNY, just as we hit new Rochelle, the GPS died. It turned out that the power outlets in the car I was given by work, don't work. The GPS had just enough stored energy to run down 95, where we really had no use for it. With no GPS Gerry grabbed my phone for GPS and his phone for the fire scanner. These worked well, of course the battery life of both phones were destroyed.
From New Roc we took 95 to the Hutch, then crossed the Triboro, picked up the exit for 31st and Astoria Blvd, we grabbed Truck route 278 to Steinway Street then a left on 35th street,a right on 42nd which brought us out on Northern Blvd at the dealer. Traffic sucked. At the dealer I asked the cashier "who in the hell would want to ride in New York City?" She said all you have to do is get on 87 and head north.
Since 87 is the Major Deegan, and you have to either go back the way we came or take the Queensboro to Manhattan, then the FDR to the 138th street bridge and the Bronx to get to the Deegan, her argument, in my opinion, held no water.
By the way that is the way we went back, making a stop at the Empire Casino in Yonkers, before taking the Cross County to 287 and back to 95.
It would have been a great day to ride though, while it was in the high 40's at home, NYC was at 57 degrees.
