Let's show you the signs I am talking about...
So many drivers in this State seem to have no clue whatsoever of it's meaning or why the word is used on traffic signs.
Let's start with the word itself and it's definition:
yield
It is a verb, that means it's an "Action" word, a verb is a word that requires action, it means you have to do something.
Let's look further and see it in a sentence,
"The knight was forced to yield his sword and shield"
It means to give up, surrender, capitulate, submit, relent, admit defeat, back down, give in.
You see, it' is telling you that the other vehicles you are about to meet have "the right of way", you are to surrender the road to them.
Why do the highway departments use such a strange word? It is simple, can you imagine what the size of the sign would be and how long it would take for you to read, "HEY ASSHOLE, THAT CAR COMING OFF THE HIGHWAY ONTO THE EXIT HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY, YOU CANNOT AND SHOULD NOT FLY OUT INTO TRAFFIC LIKE SOME FAT ASS BEHEMOTH WITH DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR"
Isn't yield much easier.
And when the sign says "Right of Way" beneath the yield word, it's telling you, you are giving it up, that the right of way is not yours, you twit.
Just in case she may see it.
