In October of 1993, Soldiers retreated from a battle which took place in Mogadishu Somalia, The movie showed the troops, made up of Rangers and Delta force running out of the City under fire because there was not enough room in the vehicles, The incident became known as the Mogadishu Mile. You may know this scene from the movie "BlackHawk Down".
In actuality it wasn't a run, and it wasn't a mile, It was a slow retreat moving cover to cover, taking rounds and firing back. The "Run' was also not a mile and it did not go straight back to base. The retreat actually headed south and then met up with more vehicles and armor allowing some of the men to ride, the group then zig zagged its way through the City avoiding blockaded streets. The route was closer to 3 miles all the while under fire.
Now, step back in time, A force made up of British Soldiers, on a mission to investigate, and destroy a reported weapons cache came across a group of "Rebels" in a small town, A group that had heard they were coming and waited for them. The following Battle would be recorded as "The Shot heard around the world". The beginning of the American Revolution.
The British continued on to Concord where they destroyed stocked weapons. In the meantime the revolutionaries had time to Regroup and met the British again more shots rang out. The British reformed and departed. The British not being familiar with the terrain were forced to follow the roads while the locals cut over hills and through woods setting up ambushes. The fighting continued all day, from Concord all the way back to Charlestown, above Boston. About 14 miles as the crows fly, By the end of the day a few hundred men were either dead or wounded.
History it seems, has a way of repeating itself.
