I...left at 6, I took the cage with two coolers in the back and headed down I-95 to the Merritt, across the Tappanzee on 287 and down to route 78 in Morristown NJ to shoot over to PA. They left, where ever they were, Big Pool if memory serves. I arrived directly at 10am. They were still on 81 in Maryland.
So I went downtown picked up some gas, and some ice for the coolers, and took some photos of the areas structures. I arrived back at Dietrich's at 10:46, they still had not arrived, 11am rolled by still no E-Board members. So I went in and bought $235 worth of smoked, pickled, or raw items, along with a couple honey varieties for Nat.
Much better after I took out my pocket knife and cut down that tree |
Once they arrived and got around to buying their goodies we parted ways, (After I dropped another $76.00) they wanted me to follow them to Centrailia, but I had places I wanted to visit and couldn't see much fun in chasing after bikes with a car. So I headed across PA to Penn Argyle via back roads and my trusty Cell phone GPS. Here is a secret by the way, if you do decide to use a phone to track where you are and direct your route, have a charging cable with you. I didn't, so I am in the middle of God knows where, (there are no highways between Kutztown and Penn Argyle), what there are is a lot of roads with names like "Mountain Top", "Kunckletown", and "Bake Oven".
When the Phone "Booped" and GPS tracking and map disappeared. I found a gas station and bought a cable. I believe perhaps it was a low battery issue in planning the route because the one above is the way it took me. The one below is what Google Maps pulls up on a PC.
Do you see a difference? The mobile app would appear to be sponsored by the local tourist commission.
Oh...one other thing, on that first map, where the line comes down just before 512 and Penn Argyle, the GPS said to take Alpha road across to 512. Alpha road was a steep uphill left girt road with loose gravel and washed out dirt between the protruding ledge in the road. I opted for...not.
I did find this though, just up the road on 737 from Dietrich's....
The reason I went to Penn Argyle was to check out the former shops, enginehouse and yards of the Lehigh and New England Railroad.
This road went under when Penn Central came about, it was based on Coal and cement traffic and served as a bridge line between other railroads. But business declined and PC killed it with unpaid bills.
Between Penn Central's Bankruptcy and the formation of Conrail, Pennsylvania and new Jersey lost a lot of railroads.
- Lehigh and New England
- Lehigh and Hudson River
- The Central Railroad of New Jersey
- The Lehigh Valley
- The Reading
These five all served Eastern PA and all are gone.
From here i went to Bangor and East Stroudsburg, then up 191 (great road by the way) to 209 up along the Delaware Water Gap to 84 and Port Jervis for the ride home.
