Children today aren't allowed to learn simple self preservation.

When we were growing up, we rode bicycles and rode on skate boards (often homemade), we didn't wear helmets or knee and elbow pads. if we fell down we got hurt, we cried a little, then got back on it. It promoted learning and the will to succeed.

Back then a playground would have metal slides, open swings, Jungle Jim, cross bars and merry go -rounds. The Jungle Jim and cross bars  have disappeared, because a child can fall.  Today the slides are built into plastic conglomerate fun spots. These are designed to keep the children where they belong on the system. We would climb up the outside and backside of the ladders, and anywhere we could get to. We would be  fighting the pull of gravity against our bodies, sometimes we would fall, more often we would not. We learned about balance, strength, and control. If we fell hard and it hurt enough we learned that we had gone over our limitations. We learned what we shouldn't do.

Merry go rounds disappeared because not only could a child fall off, but they could get propelled off. I know, it happened to me, I lost a tooth because of it. But, you learned about something, you didn't know it had a name (G Forces) you just learned the feeling.
You learned that there are forces that push against you when you go fast.

Today all this is gone, actually we have been pushing the safety issue for years, taking away things that may hurt our children.

That is why today we have adults who hurt themselves all over the place and the rest of us have to put up with this type of crap.

Isolating a human from dangerous things does not keep them safe, learning keeps them safe, ignorance promotes stupidity.

Falling off a bicycle or the monkey bars is similar to getting a vaccination, you get a little pain, a little dose, so you don't get a larger dose later on.
