Wood work is about speed, Lathes turn faster, saw blades and bands fly at high speed.

Metal work uses slower speeds, when using a metal saw, even slow speeds cut better and do not burn blades, same as for drilling.

This also means that, while you should always use common sense and caution around machinery, when something goes wrong in wood working bad shit happens really fast.
