It is amazing how many Americans do not know that World War II was fought at the doorsteps of their country, just about everyone knows that the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, a few know about the Aleutians, but mention submarine warfare and they all think of the North Atlantic somewhere around Greenland and England.
The truth falls a little bit closer, like the rings in the rocks off Eastern point beach in Groton Connecticut which supported the anti-submarine nets to keep German subs from entering the river. The orders at night that required blackout orders and Civil Defence personnel making sure everyone had their black out curtains in place so that the merchant and troops ships couldn't be silhouetted against the shoreline by German Submarines. They also don't know that 20 German Submarines rest in the waters off the Eastern seaboard.
